Card Weaving
by Candace Crockett
|
With nothing more than some strands of colored yarn and a few simple cards with holes in them,
readers can easily weave fabrics and exquisitely patterned, woven bands of great complexity
and beauty. No loom is required, and no tedious picking out of patterns by hand. This ingenious
system of weaving dates back to ancient Egypt, and China. Remnants of prehistoric card-woven fabrics
have been found in pharaohs' tombs and in Bronze Age bogs. Contemporary weaves use the technique
to produce belts and bands, decorative trims, bags, wearable art, and wall hangings.
