The Art & Craft of Natural Dyeing
By J.N. Liles
|
For several thousand years, all textile dyes were of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin,
and many ancient civilizations possessed excellent dye technologies. The first synthetic dye
was produced in 1856, and the use of traditional dyes declined rapidly thereafter. By 1915,
few non-synthetics were being used by industry of craftspeople. This book is an attempt to
consolidate the lore of the older dyers, with the author's first-hand experience in producing
natural dyes of the pre-synthetic era for dyeing cotton, linen, silk, and wool.
