Born in 1900 to a Scottish father and an Irish mother, Veronica Gainford spent most of her youth in Northumberland and the West Highlands of Scotland. She first learned to knit at the age of 5 and continued well into her 90's, ever a lively knitter and ever devoted to keeping Scottish knitting traditions alive. Here she had gathered over 50 designs for traditional Scottish stockings with top turn-overs, including textures, cables, color-patterns, lace and diced hose.
