Mushroom Cap

Sizes:
Adult and Child (child version in parenthesis)

Yarn:
1 skein of Morehouse Merino 3-Strand and small amount of a different color for border

Gauge:
Over 2x2 unstretched rib, 5½ stitches = 1 inch

Needles:
#5 or #6 circular needle, 16" long
(or size to obtain correct gauge);
Set of double-pointed #5 or #6
(you can also knit the entire hat
with double-pointed needles)

With small amount of contrasting color yarn cast on 88 (80) stitches. Join and work 8 rounds in knit 2 purl 2 rib pattern. Switch to main color yarn and knit next round. Continue working in knit 2 purl 2 rib pattern until hat measures 6 (5)" from the beginning.

Decreases — Work next round as follows: *knit 2, purl 2 together*
rep from * to end of round. Work 6 rounds as follows:
*knit 2, purl 1* rep from * to end of round.

Next round (switch to double-pointed needles if you are using circular needle):
*knit 2 together, purl 1* rep from * to end of round.
Work 6 rounds in knit 1 purl 1 rib pattern.

Next round: knit 1, *knit 2 together* rep from * to end of round.

Last 2 rounds: *knit 2 together* rep from * to end of rounds.
Pull yarn through remaining stitches.
