Morehouse Farm Merino
Bojangles Hat

A MOREHOUSE ORIGINAL PATTERN

Sizes:
Child small and medium;
adult small and medium

Yarn:
Small amounts of worsted weight yarn
(approximately 280 yards for 2 hats),
in lots of different colors.
The samples shown were knit with
Morehouse Merino 3-Strand yarn.

Needles:
Set of double-pointed #5 or #6
(size to obtain gauge)

Gauge:
4½ stitches = 1 inch over garter stitch

Arrange the yarn colors in sequence— the way you’d like to knit them into your hat (some colors you’ll be using for several stripes, others you may use only once and work several rounds in that color). Break off yarn after completing a stripe (except in Version 4), leaving a tail about 4” long. After finishing hat, simply tie tails together using a square knot, then cut yarn leaving about 1/4” after knot.

Hat is knit in the round.
Cast on 75 (79/81/85) stitches.
Join and start with your choice of stripe pattern.

Stripes can be worked
in any of the following ways:

Stripe Version 1
Knit 1 round, purl 1 round

Stripe Version 2
Knit 1 round, purl 2 or 3 rounds

Stripe Version 3
Knit 1 round, then work 4 rounds in seed stitch (first round: *knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * to end of round, ending round with knit 1; second round: *purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * to end of round, ending round with purl 1—
repeat these 2 rounds).

Stripe version 4
Knit 1 round in color A
Knit next round in color B
Repeat these 2 rounds 1 or 2 more times
Don’t break off yarn after completing a round—
pull new yarn color up inside hat in back of color you just finished with and start next round with new yarn color.

Mix or repeat stripe versions the way you want your hat to look. Work stripe versions until hat measures 4” (4˝”/ 5”/a little over 5”).

Start decreases: continue in stockinette stitch (knit each round) and switch yarn colors every round. First decrease round: *knit 6 stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round (knit stitches remaining at end of round on this and all subsequent decrease rounds). Knit 6 rounds (switching yarn colors each round). Next decrease round: *knit 5 stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 5 rounds. Next decrease round: *knit 4 stitches, knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 4 rounds. Next decrease round: *knit 3 stitches, knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 3 rounds. Next decrease: *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 2 rounds. Next round: *knit 1 stitch, knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 2 together; repeat from * to end of round. Pull yarn through remaining stitches.
