Legs:

With orange yarn and smaller needles, cast on 6 stitches.
Legs are knit in a Garter stitch pattern. Knit 82 rows. Then,
increase 1 stitch at the beginning of next 6 rows—12 stitches.

Flower Pattern
(Solid Color and Variegated Color)

There were two additional decrease rows
that crept into the pattern ..

Cast on 200 stitches and knit 22 rows
(add more rows for larger flower).
Mark middle of row with a piece of different color yarn.

Next row: *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from *
to middle of row = 50 stitches on first needle.
Start with second needle and *knit 2 stitches together;
repeat from * to end of row = 50 stitches on second needle.

Now put the two needles parallel to each other (with one needle
behind the other) and work the next row as follows:
*knit stitch on needle closest to you together with stitch
on needle in back (similar to three-needle bind-off —
without binding off, of course); repeat from * to end of row
= 50 stitches total on one needle.

Next row: *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from *
to end of row = 25 stitches.

Double yarn for the final 3 rows. Mark middle of row

knit last stitch = 4 stitches. Bind off in next row.

Gator Mitts
Here is a revised Thumb Gusset:

Work next round as follows: *knit 1 stitch, increase 1 stitch
(work increases as follows: pick up yarn between stitches
with left-hand needle— pick it up from the front towards back,
then knit into the backof the loop over needle); repeat from *
2 more times (you'll have 6 stitches on the right-hand needle).

Continue round as follows: *knit 5 (6/7) stitches, increase 1 stitch;
repeat from * 2 more times; knit the next 5 (6/7); then end round with
*knit 1 stitch, increase 1 stitch; repeat from * 2 more times;
knit last stitch — total of 36 (40/44) stitches.

Knit 12 (14/16) rounds. Next, knit round to last 4 stitches, and now
put the last 4 stitches and first 4 stitches (from next round) on a
stitch holder. You now have 28 (32/36) stitches on needles. Knit 20
(22/24) rounds, or the length to cover a child's fingers. Put stitches
on 2 needles — 14 (16/18) stitches on each needle.

And on Thumb: Put stitches from holding needle on two needles.
Pick up 3 (3/4) stitches between the first and the last stitch —
a total of 11 (11/12) stitches.

You now have 56 (59/63/66) stitches each for front and back. Continue on first half of stitches, working back and forth (knitting on right side and purling on inside—wrong side—of vest). *Bind off 2 stitches at the beginning of next 2 rows, then bind off 1 stitch at the beginning of next 4 rows. You now have 48 (51/55/58) stitches left. Continue in stockinette stitch pattern—20 (22/26/28) additional rows. Switch to variegated yarn color and knit 16 (18/18/18) rows. Next row: knit 10 (10/11/11) stitches; bind off the next 28 (31/33/36) stitches (bind off loosely so neck opening will fit comfortably over head); knit remaining 10 (10/11/11) stitches. Measure 10 yards of yarn (without stretching yarn), then break off variegated yarn. Wrap measured yarn into small ball. Leave stitches on holding needle. Repeat from * for second half of stitches. Don’t break off variegated yarn.

Shoulder Bind-Off: Knit shoulders together from front and back pieces: right side facing out, starting at shoulder edge (this is similar to three-needle bind off, except that you don’t bind off stitches: put front and back pieces parallel to each other — right side facing out — and knit stitches together. How? Knit the first stitch on needle closest to you together with first stitch on needle in back, then knit second stitch on needle closest to you together with second one on needle in back, etc. Continue this way, knitting two stitches together from front and back needles. Repeat for other shoulder — use small ball of yarn. You now have 10 (10/11/11) stitches left at each shoulder and the shoulders from front and back are joined together.

Snake Tail: Continue at shoulder with small ball of yarn and work tail of snake as follows: *Knit 6 rows. Work the next 2 rows as follows: knit row to last 2 stitches, knit those 2 stitches together. Repeat from * until you have 2 (2/3/3) stitches left. Bind off.

Snake Head: With stitches on other shoulder, knit 24 (26/26/26) rows. Next: increase 1 stitch at the beginning of each row until you have 16 (16/17/17) stitches. Knit 4 rows. Next row: knit 3 stitches, yarn over needle (this will create the eye holes—similar to button holes), knit row to last 3 stitches, yarn over needle, knit remaining 3 stitches. *Next 2 rows: knit rows to last 2 stitches, knit those 2 stitches together. Knit 4 rows. Repeat from * until you have 8 (8/9/9) stitches left. Finish as follows: *work row to last 2 stitches, knit those 2 stitches together. Repeat from * until you have 2 (2/3/3) stitches left. Bind off.

left-hand needle, now knit stitch again, this time through back of stitch);

1 stitch (increase by picking up yarn between stitches with left-hand
needle; then knitting through back of loop over needle), knit to end

knit to end of row. Knit 3 rows.   Next row: knit 3 stitches, increase
