Knit swatches using 2 or more colors per swatch. Knit swatches with horizontal or vertical stripes; knit swatch diagonally — from corner to corner— or work stripes as mitered corner (see black & white sample below in second row at right).

For horizontal stripes on swatch, cast on 28-32 stitches (for different card sizes, adjust stitch count) and work in garter stitch to desired height or about 4”. Use different yarn colors for stripes (see below for ideas). When switching yarn colors, leave about 4” of yarn.

For vertical stripes on swatch, cast on 20-22 stitches and knit to desired width of card or about 6”.

For diagonal stripes, cast on 2 stitches. Increase 1 stitch at the beginning of each row until you have 30 stitches. Next, *increase at the beginning of row, knit row to last 2 stitches, knit those 2 stitches together; knit next row. Repeat from * a total of 20 rows (switch to another yarn color after 10 rows). Next: knit each row to last 2 stitches, knit those 2 stitches together, until you have 2 stitches left. Bind off.

For mitered corner, cast on 41 (or any uneven number) stitches. *Knit to middle 3 stitches, knit 3 stitches together, knit to end of row. Knit next row. Repeat from * until you have 3 stitches left. Knit those 3 stitches together and pull yarn through remaining stitch. Switch yarn color every 2 or 4 rows for stripes.

Finishing Swatches: instead of darning in ends, knot two yarn ends together where you switched colors; then cut ends to ½” from knot. Bend all ends toward back side of swatch (see top picture); then put glue around entire edge of swatch and glue to card.
