A MOREHOUSE MERINO ORIGINAL PATTERN

Gauge

florets 3” diameter; ribbon about 24” long and 2” to 3” wide

sport weight; red for ribbon, misc. colors for florets

24” circular #3 for ribbon; set of double-pointed #3 for florets

not crucial; about 5 to 6 stitches per inch over Garter stitch

RIBBON   With circular needle and red yarn, cast on 180 stitches.
Knit to desired width of ribbon — about 32 to 40 rows. Bind off loosely
(to allow for stretch in ribbon).

FLORETS   Florets are knit back and forth. With circular needle, cast on
140 stitches and knit 8 rows. Mark middle of row with a piece of different
color yarn. Use double-pointed needles for next row and work as follows:
*knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to middle of row = 35 stitches
on first needle. Start with new needle and *knit 2 stitches together; repeat
from * to end of row = 35 stitches on second needle. Now put the two needles parallel to each other (with one needle behind the other) and work next row as follows: *knit stitch on needle closest to you together with stitch on needle in back (similar to three-needle bind-off — without binding off, of course); repeat from * to end of row = 35 stitches total on one needle. Next row: knit first stitch, *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of row = 18 stitches. Divide stitches over 2 needles (9 stitches per needle) and put needles parallel to each other and knit stitches from both needles together (same as before) = 9 stitches on one needle. Next row: knit first stitch, *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of row = 5 stitches. Bind off.
