About 5 stitches = 1 inch over stockinette stitch pattern

3” diameter Styrofoam ball with hole drilled for finger; miscellaneous items
for decoration, such as buttons, feathers, beads etc.
Puppet is knit in one piece, starting at the bottom. Head ball is inserted
before final decreases at top of head.
Cast on 64 stitches and knit until puppet measures 7˝”. Add stripes
in as many colors as you want.
Armholes: use the first 32 stitches for front, working back and forth in stockinette
stitch pattern (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 16 rows. Repeat for back. Join stitches
again in next round and knit 3 additional rounds.
Neck decreases: *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of
round = 48 stitches remaining. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from *
to end of round = 24 stitches. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from *
to end of round = 12 stitches. Knit 1 round. Switch to yarn color for head.
Head: with head yarn color, knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 1 stitch, increase 1 stitch
(increase by picking up yarn between stitches with left-hand needle and knitting through back of loop
over needle); repeat from * to end of round = 24 stitches. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 2 stitches,
increase 1 stitch; repeat from * to end of round = 36 stitches. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 3 stitches,
increase 1 stitch; repeat from * to end of round = 48 stitches. Knit 23 rounds. Start decreases: *knit 2
stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round = 36 stitches. Knit 1 round. Insert
Styrofoam ball (make sure hole for finger lines up with opening at neck) and continue with decreases
as follows: next round, *knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round =
24 stitches. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round =
12 stitches. Pull yarn through remaining stitches, or repeat last decrease round once more.

Arms: pick up stitches around armhole opening. Right side facing, pick up 1 stitch per
2 rounds and 1 additional stitch each at shoulder and at underarm position = 18 stitches. Knit 12 rounds.
Switch to different yarn color for hands and knit 5 rounds. Next round: *knit 2 stitches together;
repeat from * to end of round. Pull yarn through remaining stitches. Repeat for other arm.
Nose: cast on 10 to 12 stitches and knit 5 to 10 rounds (depending on length of nose).
Pull yarn through stitches. Stuff nose with yarn remnants (from darning in ends) and sew onto middle of head.
Eyes and Mouth: use chain stitch and stitch onto head (you might want to draw outline
in pencil before stitching).


Hair: attach strands of yarn to head simi-lar to attaching fringe—pull several strands of
yarn through top of head (or at side for clown) with crochet hook, then put ends through loop and pull tight.
Miscellaneous: add hats, collars, beads, buttons, etc.
