Cat Mat

A MOREHOUSE MERINO ORIGINAL PATTERN
Size:
About 16" x 16"
Yarn:
3 skeins of sport-weight yarn;
about 220 yards each skein
(sample is knit with 3 skeins of
Morehouse Merino 2-Strand Yarn)
Needles:
#11
Gauge:
About 3 stitches = 1 inch
over garter stitch
Mat is knit with all 3 skeins simultaneously. It is
knit from corner to corner in garter stitch pattern.
Cast on 3 stitches. Knit 1 row. Next row: knit first stitch
but keep stitch on left needle and knit into the back of the
same stitch once more (this is the way to increase 1 stitch
on each row), then knit to end of row. Repeat this row until
you have 65 stitches. Next: knit row to last 2 stitches, knit
those 2 stitches together. Repeat this row until you have 3
stitches left. Bind off the 3 stitches.
That's all there is to the knitting part. You may want to trim
the mat with a crochet border around all four sides, or add a
row or two of garter stitch.
Now let's turn the mat into a super soft, cozy bed:
wash the mat in warm water with mild soap. Scrub and rub mat
to felt slightly. Rinse in warm water. Squeeze out as much water
as possible and lay flat to dry. When completely dry, brush surface
on one side with a brush (a hair brush works best). Brush vigorously
until individual stitches are no longer recognizable and surface begins
to look like fleece. Now call Kitty and invite it to take a nap.
