Summer Bag

A MOREHOUSE ORIGINAL PATTERN
Size: about 8”x 6”
Yarn: worsted weight used double,
about 450 yards total
Needles: #5 or #6
(tight knitting is a must, so bag won’t sag)
Start by making shoulder strap: braid or crochet strap 40” long. If you crochet strap, double or
triple yarn and use chain stitch (you’ll need 2 or 3 pieces of yarn, each one 6 yards long).
Braid or crochet strap tightly so there is little stretch in it.
Now start knitting bag: cast on 35 stitches and work in your choice of simple knit/purl pattern
until you have just enough yarn left over to bind off tightly, crochet or braid short piece
(2 inches long) for button loop and to sew sides together.
The pattern pictured on bag is worked as follows: row 1 and all uneven rows are knit, row 2
and all even rows are worked as *knit 1 purl 1; rep from * to end of row, ending with knit 1.
Other pattern choices:
Seed stitch pattern worked as follows: rows 1 & 2 *knit 1 purl 1; rep from * to end of row,
ending with knit 1. Repeat these 2 rows.
Another simple design: rows 1 & 3: *knit 1 purl 1; rep from * to end of row, ending with knit 1.
Row 2: knit first stitch, *knit 1 purl 1; rep from * to end of row. Row 4: knit. Rows 5 & 7:
knit first stitch, *knit 1 purl 1; rep from * to end of row. Row 6: *knit 1 purl 1; rep from *
to end of row, ending with knit 1. Row 8: knit. Repeat these 8 rows.
Work in pattern of your choice until bag measures 14”. Bind off.
Sew sides, attach straps at side of bag and loop for button at edge in middle of flap
(see illustration below).
