Octopus Hat

A MOREHOUSE ORIGINAL PATTERN

Sizes:   adult, child regular & child small

Yarn:   2 skeins of Morehouse Merino 2-Ply
(sport weight, 225 yards per skein)

Needles:   set of double-pointed #6 and #7
(or sizes to obtain gauge)

Gauge:   with #6 needles = 4 stitches per inch over
stockinette stitch using yarn double; gauge on arms
not crucial

Use sport weight yarn double
throughout pattern.

Start with the arms of the Octopus. Work each arm separately.
With #7 needles, cast on 2 stitches.

Rows 1 & 2: knit
Row 3: knit first stitch, increase 1 stitch (work increase as follows: knit first stitch but don’t drop stitch off left-hand needles, knit into same stitch again—but this time through back of stitch), knit last stitch
Row 4: knit first stitch, purl 1 stitch, knit last stitch
Row 5: knit
Row 6: repeat row 4
Row 7: knit to last stitch, increase 1 stitch (work increase as before by knitting last stitch twice)
Row 8: knit first stitch, purl row to last stitch, knit last stitch
Row 9: knit
Row 10: repeat row 8
Row 11: knit first stitch, increase 1 stitch, knit to end of row
Row 12: repeat row 8
Row 13: knit
Row 14: repeat row 8
Row 15: repeat row 7– you now have a total of 6 stitches
Rows 16-43: repeat row 8 on even-numbered rows; knit all uneven-numbered rows

End with knit row (Row 43). Break off yarn leaving a tail 5” long. Put stitches on a holding needle (if you run out of #7 needles, use needles from #6 set). Make 8 arms. Don’t break off yarn after completing 8th arm.

Body or Head of Octopus   You’ll be working in the round for rest of hat. Switch to smaller needles (#6). Knit the stitches on 8th arm to last stitch, slip this last stitch (as if to knit stitch). Continue with 2nd arm and knit first stitch, then slip last stitch from previous arm over this first stitch. Knit 2nd arm to last stitch and slip last stitch. Now double yarn by adding tail from second arm to yarn you are knitting with (this saves having to darn in all those ends and reinforces edge of hat). Knit first stitch, then slip last stitch over this stitch. Knit to last stitch, slip stitch and start with next arm. Repeat the procedure until you get to last arm. Switch to a new needle whenever necessary. Knit stitches on 8th arm (place marker here—we’ll call this Marker B), then cast on 18 (16/12) stitches using e-loop cast-on or open-knit cast-on method. Place a second marker at end of row (we’ll call this one Marker A) and join stitches by knitting stitches on first arm. You now have 59 (57/53) stitches. Knit 3 rounds. Next round: knit first stitch, then increase 1 stitch (increase by picking up yarn between stitches with left-hand needle and knitting through back of loop on needle), *knit 5 stitches, increase 1 stitch; repeat from * to Marker B; then knit remaining stitches. You now have 68 (66/62) stitches. Knit 2 rounds.

Eyes of Octopus   Next round: knit to Marker B, then knit 3 (2/0) stitches and cast on 10 stitches for first eye (use e-loop or open-knit cast-on). Knit the next 12 stitches and cast on 10 stitches for second eye, knit remaining 3 (2/0) stitches of round. You now have a total of 38 (36/32) stitches between markers. Knit 2 rounds. Next round: knit to Marker B, knit 1 (0/0) stitch, then *knit 3 stitches together; repeat from * a total of 4x; knit the next 12 (12/8) stitches; and *knit 3 together; repeat from * to end of round (a total of 4 repeats; ending round for adult size with knit 1 stitch). You have 22 (20/16) stitches left between markers. Knit 1 round. Next round: knit to Marker B; then knit 1 (0/0) stitch, next *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from *; knit 12 (12/8) stitches; *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from *. You now have a total of 18 (16/12) stitches again between markers. You can remove Marker B.

Knit 20 (17/15) rounds. Next, *knit 4 stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round (knit remaining stitches—if any—at end of round). Knit 4 rounds. Next, *knit 3 stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round (again, knit remaining stitches at end of round). Knit 3 rounds. Next round: *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 2 rounds. Next, *knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round. Knit 1 round. Next round: *knit 2 stitches together; repeat from * to end of round. Repeat this last round one more time; then pull yarn through remaining stitches.
