Striped Vest for Adults

A MOREHOUSE ORIGINAL PATTERN
Sizes:
Adult Small, medium & large; to fit sizes 34, 40 & 46
(larger sizes in parenthesis)
Yarn:
Worsted weight yarn, sample is knit with Morehouse
Merino 3-Strand, 3 skeins main color, 2 skeins for
stripes and borders (145 yards per skein)
Needles:
29” long circular needle #8 or #9 (size to obtain
correct gauge), set of double-pointed needles
#8 or #9 for border around armholes
Gauge:
3˝ stitches = 1 inch over stockinette stitch
Vest is knit in the round. With yarn color for stripes, cast on 122 (144/164) stitches.
Join and *purl 1 round, knit 1 round; rep from * total of 2 times. Purl 1 more round.
Switch to main color yarn, knit next round and increase 4 stitches evenly. Knit 5 more rounds.
*Switch to stripe color yarn and knit 1 round, then purl 1 round. Back to main color yarn and
knit 6 rounds. Repeat from * until you have 8 (8/9) thin stripes (not counting border at
beginning of vest) ending with stripe color yarn. (Don’t break off yarn when you switch
colors, just pull up new color loosely on inside of vest, cross over with yarn color you’ve
just finished with to avoid gap where new stripe begins.) Now switch to main color yarn.
Medium size only: knit 4 rounds. All sizes: knit to middle of round—63 (74/84) stitches.
Now turn and — on inside of vest or wrong side — purl back to beginning of round. Continue
working back and forth on first half of stitches. Maintain stripe pattern as on body of vest
(you’ll be purling second and fourth row in main color, and you’ll be knitting both rows
in stripe color yarn). Work in pattern until you have 5 (6/6) thin stripes from armhole division.
Switch to main color yarn and work 6 more rows in pattern. Now switch to stripe color yarn
and knit 6 rows. Leave stitches on holding needle. Repeat for back side and work to same
length as front. Bind off shoulders from front and back together using three-needle bind off.
(How? put front and back piece parallel to each other — wrong side facing out — and bind off 19 (24/28)
stitches from armhole toward neck. You’ll need a third needle to bind off with.
Knit the first stitch on needle closest to you together with first stitch on needle in back,
then knit second stitch on needle closest to you together with second one on needle in back,
then bind off regularly by lifting first stitch over second one.) Repeat at other shoulder —
again binding off 19 (24/28) stitches toward neck. Then bind off middle stitches around neck line very,
very loosely.
Borders around armholes: using double-pointed needles and with stripe color yarn, pick up stitches
around armhole as follows: beginning at armhole division under arm, right side facing, pick up 1 stitch
per 2 rows, 1 additional stitch at shoulder and under arm. *Purl 1 round, knit 1 round; rep from * 3 times.
Bind off loosely in last knit round. Repeat for other armhole.
