Katie’s Kep Yarn

Each year, the Shetland Wool Week selects a patron to design a pattern just for them.
This year, Wilma Malcolmson designed Katie’s Kep. It’s named after her mother – she comes from a long line of Shetland fair isle knitters!  In fact, her granddaughter, Teri, teaches some pretty great classes too.  Check out Wilma’s web site at shetlanddesigner.co.uk/ and Terri’s web site: terrilaura.co.uk.

Knit in two to 6 colorways of sport or fingering yarn, you’re sure to find a way to make your Katie’s Kep your own.
Though the 2020 Shetland Wool Week has been cancelled due to COVID-19, you can still download the pattern for free.  If you’d consider making a donation to the Shetland Amenity Trust (the group that runs Wool Week), they’ll be back better than ever next year!

Shown is our Katie’s Kep, knit in 2 colors of Morehouse Merino 2-ply:  a solid background color and a variegated foreground color.  That means only 4 ends to weave in!  The color variation is subtle and beautiful, and you eliminate the worries about color placement.

Get your pattern from Shetland Wool Week and pick out your yarn below.  The kit price is just the price of the yarn, which ultimately depends on which you pick (a handpaint, a variegated, or a mini skein).

Our samples are shown in Natural Soft white as the background color, with Elderberry, Seacoast, and Beaujolais as the foreground colors.

This project is featured as a Knitalong in the Morehouse Merino Flock and casts on July 10, 2020.
We’ll learn or practice
– Fair Isle in 2 colors
– converting a multi-color chart to black and white
– Mock ribbing
and
– double decreases (don’t worry, they are a lot easier than they sound!)
