Yarn:  5 skeins of Morehouse Merino 2-Ply

Needles:  #6 or #7 circular needle, 24″ long and one 16″ circular (or DPNs) for neckline

The poncho is knit back and forth, but the circular needle will accommodate the large number of stitches more comfortably.
