When I envisioned this shawl, I imagined the legendary mermaid, Lorelei, gazing out across the surface of her pool; when the water is still, she can see her reflection, but with the lightest stirring of wind, the water ripples and the reflection begins to mirror a thousand separate facets of sunlight. The patterns of the light change as it plays across the moving water, sometimes almost still and sometimes dancing across its dappled surface.
Lorelei’s Looking Glass mimics this rippling reflection with garter stripes and slip-stitch motifs in a vortex-shaped shawl with a gentle curve that might remind you of a mermaid’s tail — but which also serves the very practical purpose of keeping the shawl snug around your shoulders. It is knit with two skeins of yarn in highly contrasting colors, with an integrated I-cord edge that hides the contrasting color being carried up the sides.

Difficulty Level: Advanced Beginner
Skills/Techniques Used: Integrated I-cord edging, I-cord bind off, slipped-stitch colorwork (Instructions provided)

Thick, thirsty felted coasters made with an easy-to-memorize mosaic stitch pattern.
Choose from:
2-color version (sample is knit in warm olive and seacoast),
a 4-color version (sample is knit in cardinal, peach, pumpkin, and sunflower). OR
a 10-color version!
The pattern includes instructions for all three.
Size: Coasters are 4 to 4 1/2″ square after felting and cutting – or skip the cutting for an approximately 8″ x 8″ trivet!

Each year, the Shetland Wool Week selects a patron to design a pattern just for them.
This year, Wilma Malcolmson designed Katie’s Kep. It’s named after her mother – she comes from a long line of Shetland fair isle knitters!
